Colestipol binds to bile acids, which are secreted from the organism in a form which bunds to the ion-exchange resin. It lowers the overall level of cholesterol and cholesterol-containing low-density lipoproteins in blood plasma while not affecting the level of high-density lipoproteins. Colestipol is used for hypercholesterolemia (including atherosclerosis and arterial hypertension). Synonyms of this drug are colestabil, colestid, lestid, and others.
