Hypertension refers to the tension or force exerted on your artery walls. (Hyper means too much, as in too much tension. ) Blood pressure is measured in two readings X over Y. The X is the systolic pressure, which is the pressure that occurs during the heart's contraction. The Y is the diastolic pressure, which is the pressure that occurs when the heart rests between contractions. In the general population, target blood pressure readings are less than 140 over 80 (140 80). Readings greater than 140 85 are considered too high, although readings of just under 144 88 are sometimes considered borderline in an otherwise healthy person. For the general population, 140 85 is lecture time, when your doctor will begin to counsel you about dietary and lifestyle habits. By 150 90, many people are prescribed an antihypertensive drug, which is designed to lower blood pressure.

Group and Gender Differences in Physical Activity and Health Behaviors

Table 2 shows, separately for the two assessments, the means and standard deviations of the three indices of nutrition, prevention, and risk behaviors for the entire sample, for males and females, and for sport and non-sport students. It is important to note that the first two indices reflect the extent to which students adopt healthy habits across a number of behaviors (i.e., four nutritional behaviors and seven prevention behaviors). Overall, across both measurement waves, students had, for the most part, healthy habits. Statistical analyses further indicated that female students had, on average, significantly healthier nutrition and prevention practices than male students, a difference that was particularly pronounced at the time of the first assessment. Similarly, sport students were significantly healthier than non-sport students with respect to nutrition habits. One line of argument for the importance of dispositions looks to logic and common experience. There is a natural tendency to associate thinking with blatant occasions - the test item, the crossword puzzle, the choice of colleges, the investment decision. Plainly, however, many situations call for thinking with a softer voice all too easily unheard -the politician's subtle neglect of an alternative viewpoint, your own and others' reasoning from ethnic stereotypes, the comfort of good enough solutions that are not all that good. Even when we sense opportunities for deeper thinking in principle, there are many reasons why we often shun them -blinding confidence in one's own view, obliv-iousness to the possibilities for seeing things differently, aversion to complexities and ambiguities, and the like. Such lapses seem all too common, which is why, for example, Dewey (1922) emphasizes the importance of good habits of mind that can carry people past moments of distraction and reluctance....

Cultural Influences on Stress and Blood Pressure

Several studies have also examined blood pressures among persons who migrate from one culture to another (Cassel, 1974 Poulter et al., 1990 Truswell et al., 1972). Specifically, the most interesting data come from studies where individuals migrate from relatively stress-free cultures into more stressful cultures (acculturation). For example, Kaminer and Lutz (i960) measured the blood pressures of bushmen of Kalahari and showed that blood pressure did not increase with age. However, bushmen who abandoned the nomadic tradition and became laborers in more agricultural cultures exhibited increased blood pressures (Truswell et al., 1972). In a similar study, Poulter et al. (1990) followed rural Kenyans who migrated to Nairobi versus controls who stayed in their home villages. Migration was associated with an increase in blood pressure within the first few months that persisted during two years following migration.
